Floor Scrubber Maintenance: Operator Tips and Insights

- Nov 17, 2024-

Maintaining a clean and safe environment is essential in any commercial space, and floor scrubbers play a vital role in achieving this goal. Designed to effectively clean hard floor surfaces, these machines require regular maintenance to ensure optimal performance.

Understanding the basics of floor scrubber maintenance is essential for operators looking to extend the life of their equipment.

Ignoring floor scrubber maintenance can lead to lost efficiency and costly repairs. Preventive maintenance is more than just a suggestion; it is a necessity that helps avoid unexpected breakdowns and keeps the machine running smoothly. By adopting a routine that includes daily tasks, operators can ensure their machines are running at peak performance.

This article will provide you with basic instructions and insights on floor scrubber maintenance, emphasizing the importance of preventative measures. From daily checklists to tips for enhancing your maintenance routine, you will find valuable information to help you maintain your equipment effectively.

Daily Maintenance of Floor Scrubbers

Step 1: Drain the Recovery and Solution Tanks

Draining the recovery tank after cleaning is essential to keeping your equipment sanitary and preventing scale buildup. Dirty water in the recovery tank can breed bacteria, leading to unpleasant odors. When you use an automatic floor scrubber to clean, the vacuum motor blows air from the recovery tank into the environment, so a clean recovery tank prevents the spread of unpleasant odors.

The solution tank should not be emptied and cleaned every day, but once a month. Your machine may have a solution filter between the solution tank and the scrubber deck. If so, remove the filter and clean the screen when you empty and clean the solution tank.

Step 2: Rinse the solution and recovery tanks

After draining, rinse with clean water. Clean the tank thoroughly by spraying the upper part and side walls of the tank with a hose. If you do this regularly, you can prevent scale buildup.

Step 3: Clean the waste tank filter and float.

Start by cleaning the vacuum shutoff. Depending on the machine, this may be a float ball or a float switch that seals the vacuum tube. Next, clean the large debris filter in the recovery tank. Many scrubbers have a bin in the recovery tank to collect large items such as paper or rocks. Clean this area to prevent these items from entering the recovery tank and clogging the drain hose.

Step 4: Clean the Brush or Pad Drive

Now that the tank is clean, turn your attention to the brush and pad drives. Remove the brush or pad drive and inspect them. If you use a brush, remove any debris (like string) that may be tangled in the bristles. If you use a pad drive, remove the pad and clean the drive.

Step 5: Disassemble and Clean the Squeegee Assembly and Blade

Often, small particles of debris that were missed while dusting accumulate around the squeegee blade. First rinse the squeegee thoroughly, then use a cloth to remove any remaining debris. While cleaning, inspect the blade for wear. If the squeegee blade is damaged, replace it. Remember that most squeegee blades are designed to flip and swivel, so you can use all four edges of the blade.

Step 6: Let Everything Air Dry

Now that the machine and its accessories are clean, let it air dry in a well-ventilated room. Allowing your commercial floor scrubber to air dry after use is essential to prevent mold and bacteria from growing in areas such as the recovery tank and brushes. Not only will this keep the machine clean and reduce unpleasant odors, it will also extend its life by preventing moisture-related damage, such as rust and corrosion on metal parts.

Step 7: Charge the Battery

The final step is to charge the battery so the machine is ready to use tomorrow.

In addition to the routine maintenance outlined here, a good preventive maintenance program can help extend the life of your cleaning equipment.
