4 Things You Must Know Before Using a Floor Scrubber on Your Gym Floor

- Jan 15, 2025-

Damage to gym surfaces is extremely costly to repair, so it is imperative that you have a properly trained operator when using an automatic floor scrubber to clean your floors. In this blog, we will consider things that floor scrubber operators need to know.

1. Know what is on the floor. You should know and understand the manufacturer's recommendations on which detergent to use. This is extremely important whether you are mopping the floor or using a floor brush. The wrong detergent can leave a fuzzy film on the floor and damage the surface. Typically, only a small amount of a neutral floor cleaner is needed. In this case, less is better. The operator should know exactly how much detergent to put in the machine and fill up a full tank of clean water, and understand the proper temperature of the water based on the manufacturer's recommendations. Also, please note that floor brushes should not be used on the court within 30 days of refinishing.

2. Remove debris before scrubbing. The entire cleaning area needs to be thoroughly dusted to ensure that all debris on the floor is removed. A small stone stuck in the pad of the scrubber can damage most floors. Additionally, debris left on the floor can be dragged by the squeegee, potentially causing scratches and damage to the floor.

3. Set up the machine correctly. Make sure the automatic floor scrubber is properly set up for gym floors. Many facilities find it better to have a dedicated floor scrubber for gym floors. If your floor scrubber has been used in other areas of the building, make sure to thoroughly rinse the solution tank so that there is no other cleaning agent left in it. Make sure you have new soft white pads installed on the pad drive. If the pads you are using are not new, remove them and clean them thoroughly. Check them to make sure they are still thick enough to use and that there is no debris left in them. Debris can leave unsightly swirls and scratches throughout the floor. Also, check that the drive tires and casters are clean, as debris stuck to them can cause problems. Check the squeegee to make sure nothing is stuck on it that could be dragged around and cause scratches. Another item to check is that the squeegee has the right suction, the squeegee is properly spaced, and that the squeegee blade is in good condition.

4. Proper pad pressure. When using a floor scrubber, make sure you are using the correct pad pressure. Too much downward pressure on the cleaning pad can cause damage. Make sure to apply the right amount of cleaning solution to the floor so that no water is left behind, gets into any cracks, or is completely sucked out.
